Copyright & Generative AI
The nature of generative AI (GAI) content, and the increasing popularity of GAI tools have led to important copyright questions including defining copyright ownership of generative AI works and the rights of creators whose works have been used to train AI models. The following provides an overview of copyright considerations to keep in mind when using GAI tools.

What is it?
- An artificial intelligence technology that automatically generates content in response to prompts (e.g. ChatGPT, MS Co-Pilot)
Are we allowed to use it?
- ALWAYS check with your instructor
Do we need to cite it?
- ALWAYS include a citation, and a statement surrounding your use
Are there risks?
- AI is known to generate inaccurate, biased, outdated, and false information. Always evaluate the information provided by AI tools.
