Seneca Libraries Staff Guide to Open Educational Resources: Use OERs

Starting Small

Faculty can start small with OERs by simply using bits and pieces in their course material. This is a good option because it is not as big a project as adapting a complete Open textbook or creating a new OER from scratch. If they choose to start small, they will need to understand how to follow the licence conditions. One condition of all Creative Commons licenses is attribution.

This Creative Commons Wiki identifies best practices for attribution with examples.

Diving In

Diving in to OERs means a faculty member has decided to adopt, adapt or create an OER to use as the primary material for their course. If a faculty member prefers to dive in to OERs, you should direct them to their Chair and Program Coordinators to discuss the adoption or adaptation. The Seneca Faculty Guide to Open Educational Resources and Other Alternatives to Textbooks provides instructions for faculty looking to Adapt or Create OERs. Also, encourage them to review the "Getting Started with Open Educational Resources" workflow below.

The OER Committee has put together some draft workflows to assist faculty interested in using OERs or alternative textbooks and course materials. They can be found on the Faculty Guide to Open Educational Resources.
