Professional standards and communications are emphasized throughout this subject.
Course Outline OPT 202Dispensing Theory I
This subject introduces the student to the professional role of the optician. Emphasis is placed in the regulation of opticians and related legislation. Students learn about different aspects of frames and lenses, including materials, types and methods of manufacturing, as well as the theory and methods of neutralizing lenses. Client assessment, frame and lens selection and delivery of finished spectacles including client teaching are included.
Course Outline OPT 301Dispensing Theory II
This subject provides the students with the theoretical foundations for dispensing specialized prescriptions which include high lens powers, presbyopic correction and those for low vision. Lens designs, powers and specific fitting techniques are considered within the framework of practical dispensing applications while emphasizing the professional responsibility of the optician.
Course Outline OPT 307Eyeglass Dispensing Lab II
This subject emphasizes procedures for fitting and dispensing high lens powers, bifocal and multifocal lens designs and consolidates knowledge and skills learned in previous professional subjects. Advanced fitting techniques, Rx interpretation and professional standards are included.
Course Outline OPT 204Eyeglass Fabrication I
This subject is designed to give students the opportunity to apply the theory of finishing single vision spectacles in a laboratory setting. Students learn procedures for the safe operation of lens edging equipment and blocking devices, use of the lensometer and clock gauge and the final verification of the lab order. Emphasis is placed on accuracy and industry tolerances.
Course Outline OPT 305Eyeglass Fabrication II
This subject expands on the theory and practice included in Eyeglass Fabrication Lab I and introduces students to finishing segmented bifocal and progressive lenses. Through tutorial and hands-on practice, students to become proficient in finishing spectacles at an advanced level.
