Information Literacy for Seneca Faculty: Scholarship as Conversation

Scholars, researchers, and practitioners advance their perspectives and interpretations of a topic through conversation. New insights or debates advance the discussion over time and there is no single uncontested answer as new and more participants contribute to the conversation. Learn more.

Key sentence: Developing familiarity with the sources of evidence, methods, and modes of discourse in the field assists novice learners to enter the conversation. Advanced learners will recognize barriers to entering the conversation.

Learning Objectives
Learners who are developing their information literate abilities will be able to:

• Recognize that research (scholarship) is open-ended as more & new participants contribute;

• Identify the contribution that particular articles, books, and other scholarly pieces make to disciplinary knowledge;

• Describe how scholarly conversations occurs across a variety of platforms (journal articles, books, conferences, blogs, etc);

• Contribute to scholarly conversation at an appropriate level, such as local online community, guided discussion, undergraduate research journal, conference presentation/poster session.
