Growing Up Canadian: HealthEarly campaigns to fight poverty and disease and help children grow up healthy led to the introduction of the school nurse, nose blowing drills and lice inspections. From open-air schools to confusing sex education classes, Health was a part of the curriculum throughout the last century. This episode traces the rise of dental care, from early century programs in schools to dentists traveling to remote areas by boat or train. Canadians recall terrifying epidemics and lengthy periods of quarantine. Home remedies were frightening enough to keep children from complaining about being ill. Over the course of the century we see the impact of public health care on children's lives. Health is one of a 6-part series entitled Growing Up Canadian. These documentaries explore the myths and realities of Canadian childhood through family life, schooling, work, play, health and the media. The series marks the contribution of childhood and youth experience in defining Canada as it grew into full nationhood in the 20th century.
On Prescription OnlyModern miracle drugs cast out demons in ways never dreamed of by the witch doctor or medicine man. This film takes you into a world of pills and potions for an intimate survey of how this modern healing magic is concocted, and an equally remarkable survey of the beneficial effects today's drugs are having in the cure of diseases that not long ago were fatal.
Concussions in Youth Sports Virtual ClassroomThe NFB, in partnership with Ryerson University, presents a Virtual Classroom about sports, concussions and the pressure to play through head injuries even though mental health issues typically ensue. Mental slowing, depression, substance abuse, mood disorders... they can all show up later, causing devastating long-term effects. When coaches, medics and fans all support the culture of powering through, it's high school athletes who are losing out-sometimes for life. We take a look at the consequences of concussions, particularly on mental health, and question the pressure to keep playing no matter what the cost.
