What does this industry do, and which companies are major players?

Developing an understanding of what the industry does is a helpful early step in the research process. An overview of an industry can be found in industry reports, which often cover industry activities, key trends, major companies, and more.

Start by using an industry report database, like IBISWorld or GlobalData Explorer. Search for the name of the industry (for example, ice cream manufacturing, coal mining, restaurants, etc.), and look for options to refine the search by geography (if necessary).

After you find a report on the industry, skim through the table of contents or navigation menu. For information on top companies operating in the industry, look for a section called 'Major Companies',  'Competitive Landscape', or 'Company Profiles'.

For additional industry information, explore the other databases on the Industry Information subject guide.
