Video Resources: FOR FACULTY: Using Videos in Courses

Note to Faculty:

The electronic resources available through Seneca Libraries are an excellent source of authoritative and -- from the student perspective -- inexpensive resources for your classes. In this era of expensive print textbooks, faculty may wish to take advantage of this and help their students by substituting the traditional print textbook with our database content or perhaps with one of our streamed videos.

Thinking about using a video in your class?

We acquire information resources that support your curriculum and students. Please contact the Liaison Librarians for your particular program(s) so that we can look into obtaining appropriate titles for coursework.

If you are considering assigning a video as compulsory viewing in a course, first please read the information below on the left, and also refer to the chart of databases either below or on the right.

Home Subscription Services: Netflix, Crave, etc.

Any public performance of a video from personal video subscription services such as Netflix, Crave, Amazon Prime, Disney+, etc. -- even in an educational institution -- is a violation of those services' Terms of Use. You have access to that content as an individual consumer, but that access does not extend to, nor can it be transferred to, the institution at which you work or attend.

We're unable to acquire access to services like these that are personal-user/username-and-password-based since these resources aren't readily licensed to educational institutions. Instructors should note that we're also unable to acquire e-textbooks with PIN numbers for the same reason.

Netflix does allow a very small number of its titles to be shown in educational settings. Note that they do not allow any and all Netflix titles to be shown in the classroom, only some selected documentaries. The permitted titles are ones that contain the words "GRANT OF PERMISSION FOR EDUCATIONAL SCREENINGS" in their descriptions on https://media.netflix.com/en/. Please see this Netflix post for further information -- https://help.netflix.com/en/node/57695 -- but also note that there is no guarantee that those films are available in the Canadian version of Netflix.
