Information Literacy for Faculty

Seneca Libraries literacies instruction program ...

► Helps students develop competencies that are critical to Seneca's  Core Literacies, academic success and lifelong learning.

► Is mapped into degree programs and embedded into other programs that have research assignments

► Is delivered at strategic points in students’ academic careers and appropriately scales and scaffolds our literacies concepts. This ensures that library instruction is sustainable, impactful, and allows students to continually build upon their literacies skills as they move through their programs.

Our librarians support research assignments. We teach students how to do academic research. We teach students to use the library's databases and research tools and to develop their research practices with the goal of encouraging "reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning" ( ACRL, 2016).

Contact your program's  liaison librarian if you want help in determining the best support for your students.

Note: Instructors are expected to be present during in-person/synchronous Library and Sandbox workshops. It is crucial for instructors to actively engage with their students, address any questions about the research assignment during the session, and provide additional context for the skills being taught. Moreover, students tend to be more engaged when the instructor participates, as it makes the session feel more integral rather than optional.

Key Information Literacy Skills in Library Instruction

This guide provides an outline of key IL skills that Seneca Libraries librarians and technicians may teach students in synchronous workshops and asynchronous information literacy materials. In addition to categorized lists of skills, it also includes sample slides as well as extra resources in the form of a Leganto list.
